| The University of Pavia’s Department of Lingue e Letterature Straniere Moderne Foreign Modern Languages and Literature (a.k.a. Dip. LLSM), was established in 1983 as a result of the merger of the Institutes of English, French, German Spanish and Russian Languages and Literature. Its premises are right in the heart of Pavia, in Corso Strada Nuova, 106/c, opposite the University’s main building and partly overlooking one of Pavia’s main squares, Piazza Vittoria (see photo below).
The Department is home to some 50 people: tenured and non-tenured teaching and research staff, research students and non-teaching personnel including both administrative and library staff.
The Department publishes Il Confronto Letterario, a literary review, now in its 22nd year. The Department’s main area of research relates to literary texts. The Department has a strong record of participation in inter-University research projects financed under Cofin regulations and regularly promotes seminars and international conferences, especially in the fields of literary translation and literary criticism. Since its foundation, the Department has participated in doctoral programmes for research students, including the current Dottorato di Lingue e Letterature Straniere Moderne. |
| The Department’s Library, located within the Department itself, houses a precious collection of some 100,000 books and periodicals. These include literary classics in their original languages, often in prestigious series such as Bibliothèque de la Pleiade, I meridiani Classici Bompiani, works of literary criticism, volumes relating to specific countries, their languages and culture, and, of course, dictionaries which include special collections, such as the one relating to historical French dictionaries. The library also houses a collection of microfilms and microfiches mainly relating to 18th century and pre-18th century French and Spanish texts. The Department’s current director is Lia Guerra, associate professor in English literature.
